Melbourne’s biggest jobs hub outside the CBD is the Monash Jobs Hub – but the area needs significant transport investment to ensure it remains strong over the next 30 years.

Around 75,000 people are employed in the Monash National Employment and Innovation Cluster which includes Monash University, the Monash Medical Centre precinct plus key sites in Kingston including the Clayton Business Park and Clayton South Industrial Precinct.

The area is home to Melbourne’s biggest employment hub outside of the CBD. Crossing over three local councils: Dandenong, Kingston and Monash, this jobs precinct contributes $9.4 billion to the Victorian economy every year and has been identified as one of the key locations to support employment in Victoria.

However, it needs urgent and significant investment into transport to ensure easy access to the additional 70,000 jobs predicted for the precinct over the next 20 years.  At the moment 75 percent of employees drive to work in the precinct and the area urgently needs better transport options to keep up with demand.

Kingston Council, along with six other local councils in the South East Melbourne group, is calling urgent investment and commitment from the federal and state governments to:

  • Build a new Huntingdale Train Station. The 40+ year old station is unfit for modern demands as the main public transport hub to the Monash jobs precinct. Everyday 6,000 passengers arrive at the station and need to access bus interchange via a low and narrow underpass.
  • Create new public transport. Planning for improved rail and light rail for the precinct has begun with three proposals mooted, but the project needs to progress to finalise a design and lock in funding.
  • Funding completion of the Westall Road Extension Project – a key arterial to link the Monash Freeway with the Mordialloc Freeway and Mornington Peninsula Freeway.
