Bonbeach Area Profile

The Facts: Bonbeach was named by the Department of Railways in 1926 following a referendum to choose a name.

Bonbeach is bounded by Shenfield Avenue, Nepean Highway, Golden Avenue, Glenbrook Avenue and an alignment to the south of Bicentennial Park in the north, the secondary drain in the east, Patterson River in the south, and Port Phillip Bay in the west.

Development of the area dates primarily from the early 1900's with many villas and townhouses built during the 1960's and 1970's.

Bonbeach is in the state electoral district of Carrum and the federal electoral division of Isaacs.

People: Bonbeach’s population is 6,412 people.

The population is forecast to increase by 3.8% (to 6,655 people) in 2036. The total population in Kingston is forecast to increase by 22.3% (from 151,389 to 185,214) by 2036. 

The most common type of household is made up of lonepersons, with 850 (30.2%) people living alone in 2016.

People aged 70-84 years are forecast to have the largest population increase with an additional 243 people in this age group from 2016 to 2036.   

Housing: The number of households is forecast to increase by 10.2% from 2,780 in 2016 to 3,063 households in 2036.

33% are 2 bedroom, 40% are 3 bedroom, 12% are 4 bedroom 3% are 5 bedroom dwellings .

62% of households in Bonbeach fully own their dwelling or are purchasing it (mortgage), 29% are renting privately, and 1.2% are in social housing. 

In 2016, 27.6% of households were paying high mortgage repayments of $2,300+ per month, and 20.3% were repaying the lowest amount between $0 - $1,133 per month.

24.2% of renting households were in the highest rental bracket paying $417 or more per week in rent.

 The majority (71%) of people in Bonbeach travel by car to work.

10.1% of households own 3 or more vehicles.  Kingston is 14.7%.  The majority own 1-2 cars (74%).

Features: Bonbeach is an established residential area.

Major features of the area include the Bonbeach Beach and foreshore, Bonbeach Life Saving Club, Patterson River Country Club, Bonbeach Sports Reserve, Chelsea Pony Club and one school, Bonbeach Primary School.

The population density of Bonbeach is 24.51 persons per hectare. 

The artist John Vincent Brock, born 15 July 1945 grew up in Bonbeach.
