Your planning permit will tell you the dates that your project must get started (commencement date) and finished (completion date).
- If you need more time to get started, you may request an extension to the commencement date before or within six months after the planning permit expires.
- If you need more time to finish, you can also ask us to extend the completion date, provided this request is made within 12 months of the permit expiry date.
We encourage the permit holder to take note of the planning permit expiry dates, as there is no appeal process through the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal if an extension of time request is made outside of the above requirements.
Applicable consideration criteria
An extension of time request is not approved automatically. We consider a range of criteria, including:
- whether there has been a change of planning policy
- whether the permit holder is 'warehousing' the permit (i.e. waiting for a more advantageous time to start the permit)
- the reason(s) that the permit has not been acted upon
- the length of time that has passed since the permit issued
- whether the time originally given was sufficient to start the permit
- any economic burden imposed on the permit holder by the permit
- the likelihood that a permit would be issued again if a new application be made.
What is required when making a request
When lodging your extension of time request you are required to provide the following information:
