Original vegetation communities

Vegetation communities are groups of indigenous plants that share a common environment. Species naturally occur together because they have similar needs.

Kingston has eight main vegetation communities. You can view the vegetation communities using the interactive map below, or download thevegetation communities map(PDF, 2MB) which reflects the original distribution of these communities before European settlement.

Planting a variety of species from your vegetation community will increase habitat and bring wildlife to your garden and surrounding area.

You can also download our Indigenous Plant Species list(PDF, 205KB) which indicates which vegetation groups each plant belongs to.
