Attracting small mammals to your garden

Krefft's glider perched on a tree

Small mammals most likely to visit your garden include the Common Ringtail Possum, Krefft’s Glider (formerly named Sugar Glider), microbats and the Grey-headed Flying-fox.

Habitat tips

  • Plant a range of indigenous plants that flower across the seasons and attract insects
  • Provide indigenous trees with hollows or species-specific nest boxes
  • Plant eucalypts to provide both food and shelter
  • Long native grass for Echidnas
  • Microbats like large old trees with hollows or loose bark
  • If possible plant trees so that their canopies connect to allow easy movement for Sugar Gliders
  • Provide a water source at ground level or a hanging bird bath
  • Practice natural pest control
  • Keep cats contained 24/7

Threats

  • Loss of nesting places (especially tree hollows)
  • Cats, dogs and foxes
