Attracting small birds to your garden

Rose Robin

The majority of small birds are insect-eaters (a great natural pest control). Exceptions are finches (eat seeds) and Silvereyes (eat berries).

Habitat tips

  • Plant small leaved or prickly indigenous shrubs for protection and safe nest sites
  • Plant a row of dense shrubs 1-2m tall along the fence to create a small bird corridor
  • Plant a range of layers including prickly wattles, tea-trees, correas and climbers
  • Provide a shallow dish of fresh water in an elevated cat-safe safe position for bathing and drinking
  • Create open areas for foraging
  • Mulch garden beds to attract tasty insect treats
  • Practice natural pest control
  • Keep your cat contained 24/7
