Attracting large birds and owls to your garden

Birds such as Tawny Frogmouths, Magpies, owls, Kookaburras and butcherbirds are meat-eaters that feed on small mammals, lizards and large insects.

A few large birds, such as the Common Bronzewing and Crested Pigeon are seed-eaters that mainly feed on grass seeds.

Habitat tips

  • Plant a variety of indigenous plant species to attract their food
  • Include a few tall indigenous trees for perching, roosting and nesting
  • Provide a source of fresh water for bathing and drinking
  • Provide tree hollows, or a nest box for some large birds such as owls
  • Practice natural pest control
  • Keep cats contained 24/7
