Attracting large birds and owls to your garden
Birds such as Tawny Frogmouths, Magpies, owls, Kookaburras and butcherbirds are meat-eaters that feed on small mammals, lizards and large insects.
A few large birds, such as the Common Bronzewing and Crested Pigeon are seed-eaters that mainly feed on grass seeds.
Habitat tips
- Plant a variety of indigenous plant species to attract their food
- Include a few tall indigenous trees for perching, roosting and nesting
- Provide a source of fresh water for bathing and drinking
- Provide tree hollows, or a nest box for some large birds such as owls
- Practice natural pest control
- Keep cats contained 24/7
