Council elections
Council elections are held every four years and are run by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
The next Kingston Council elections are due to be held in 2028.
Our current Councillors were sworn in at a Special (Statutory) Meeting on 13 November 2024.
The City of Kingston is split into 11 wards, with one Councillor elected to represent each ward. Find out more about our wards.
Who votes in Council elections?
Voting is compulsory for all residents listed on the voters' roll. If you’re registered and don’t vote you may be fined.
You need to vote if:
- you will be at least 18 years of age on election day
- you live in the Kingston area, and
- you are on the state electoral roll at your current address.
When can you enrol to vote?
State-enrolled voters
Residents who were enrolled to vote in the 2024 election are automatically enrolled to vote in the next election. If you have moved into the area since the previous election, you should enrol to vote as soon as possible. To check your enrolment or update your details if you have moved in the past four years, visit the Victorian Electoral Commission Website.
Council-enrolled voters
Council-enrolled voters include ratepayers who are property owners, occupiers or corporations.
You can apply to become a council-enrolled voter directly with your council if you are:
- 18 years or older; and
- a property owner (maximum of two owners for any one property); or
- an occupier (paying rates for a property that you occupy but do not own); or
- an appointed representative (director or company secretary) of a corporation that pays rates; and
- not a state-enrolled voter within the council area.
Once you are on the council roll, you must vote. If you don’t vote, you may get a fine. You will not be fined if you choose not to become a council-enrolled voter.
How do you cast your vote?
Elections are run via post and more information will become available closer to the next election date.
