The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is a major transport infrastructure project that will connect Cheltenham to Box Hill via Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley and Burwood, helping shape the future of public transport across Melbourne’s south-east.
As part of SRL East, a train stabling and maintenance facility will be constructed on Kingston Road in Heatherton. This facility is essential to the operation of the rail network, providing space to store, service and maintain SRL trains.
However, the stabling yards will occupy a significant area of land that could otherwise support important community infrastructure, including regional-scale sporting and recreational facilities.
We have a long-term vision to deliver Kingston Fields: a regional sporting and community precinct designed to serve a broad catchment and support a wide range of sports and recreational activities. To realise this vision, suitable land is required.
Given the scale and impact of the SRL stabling facility, we are advocating for appropriate offset land to help compensate for the loss of potential open space and enable the future delivery of Kingston Fields for the benefit of the wider community. This presents an opportunity to ensure that major state infrastructure investment is balanced with equally important community and recreational outcomes for Melbourne’s growing south-east.
