Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands Boardwalk and shared path upgrades
- Project typeMajor Project
- Project value$2.7M (estimated)
- Project scheduleStage 1 construction is planned for 2026.
About the project
Council is working to improve access and safety across Kingston’s shared path network. As part of this commitment, we are planning to upgrade shared paths and construct a new elevated boardwalk along Edithvale Road, Chelsea Heights, near the Edithvale–Seaford Wetlands.
Currently, pedestrians and cyclists use a roadside path that is frequently flooded during wet weather. The new elevated boardwalk and upgraded paths will provide a safe, accessible and flood-resilient route that can be used all year round.
These upgrades will support walking and cycling, improve safety, and strengthen active transport connections between Aspendale Gardens and Chelsea Heights, while also enhancing the experience of accessing this important natural area.
The boardwalk location and design have been carefully developed to:
- Comply with Melbourne Water and Department of Transport requirements
- Respect the environmental sensitivity of this RAMSAR-listed wetland site
- All works will be carried out in accordance with strict environmental standards to protect the wetlands and surrounding habitat.
Project stages and estimated timings
This project will be delivered in two stages, allowing works to be carefully managed and minimising impacts on the environment and community. Stages are as follows:
Stage 1: Shared path upgrades
Near the Edithvale–Seaford Wetlands Education Centre car park
Timing: Mid-2026
Council is working towards engaging a contractor in autumn 2026 and is aiming to start construction in mid-2026
Works include
- New shared paths on both sides of the car park entrance
- Pram crossings
- Drainage improvements
- Solar lighting
Stage 2: Elevated boardwalk
South side of Edithvale Road, between the Wetlands Education Centre car park and the bird-viewing pavilion car park
Timing: Planned for autumn 2027 (subject to final design and approvals)
Works include
- Raised boardwalk with handrails
- Path connections at both ends, linking into the existing shared path network
Further details, including construction timing and contact information for construction-related enquiries, will be shared closer to the start of works. Please note that the final design may be subject to change as approvals progress.
We look forward to delivering these important upgrades, improving safety and accessibility while protecting the unique environmental values of the Edithvale–Seaford Wetlands.
