Turning stormwater into a sporting asset

GR Bricker Reserve

Our largest stormwater harvesting project is set to commence at G.R. Bricker Reserve in Moorabbin to help keep our public open space green and cool.

Entracon Civil Pty Ltd has been contracted to undertake stage 1 of the project that includes diverting stormwater from a main drain that services a huge 205-hectare catchment; installing a pump station; constructing new drainage pipes, pits and a vegetated filter basin; and installing a large storage tank under the oval.

The new system will capture and treat stormwater from Melbourne Water’s main drain before storing it underground for irrigating the oval, the athletics in-field and surrounding parkland.

Once complete, it will provide a reliable, sustainable water source to keep the reserve green year-round while reducing the amount of polluted runoff that flows into Port Phillip Bay.

This is another exciting project being delivered under Council’s nationally recognised Integrated Water Strategy – which was awarded Excellence in Strategic or Master Planning at the 2024 National Stormwater Industry Awards.

Kingston Mayor Georgina Oxley said the project demonstrates how smart, sustainable water management can deliver multiple community benefits.

“Our Integrated Water Strategy is about creating a water-sensitive city – one that supports healthy environments, great sporting facilities and saves valuable drinking water. G.R. Bricker Reserve is one of many projects that will help us achieve that vision,” Cr Oxley said.

Similar projects are planned for other reserves across Kingston in the coming years, helping to green and cool our suburbs for current and future generations.
