Participating in the Aussie Bird Count (held from 14 to 20 October) is as simple as downloading the free Aussie Bird Count app, spending 20 minutes in your favourite outdoor space and counting the birds you see!

You can count in your backyard, front yard, courtyard, local park, school yard or other favourite outdoor space and submit your counts through the Aussie Bird Count app. The app even has a handy 'bird finder' tool to help you identify any birds you are unsure of.

You can also join us and local bird enthusiast John Sise on a free bird-watching tour of Rowan Woodland Reserve (along with the Friends of Rowan Woodland Reserve) or Namatjira Park! You will:

  • participate in a bird count guided by John Sise of two of Kingston’s bushland reserves
  • be provided an opportunity to receive a comprehensive bird list after the walk
  • explore and learn about the diverse birdlife in Kingston
  • deep dive into bird identification and have all your bird-related questions answered.

Why it’s important

The data collected provides a snapshot of Australian birds at the same time each year. It allows us to look at the trends in our bird communities yearly and plays a crucial role in monitoring and analysing bird community trends. This information is vital for ensuring the thriving existence of our local bird populations and is also an important indicator of the heath of our environment.
