Sands and McDougall Melbourne Directories.

SMCDL.jpg

Sands and Kenny published the first Melbourne Directory in 1857. In 1862, with his new partner McDougall, Sands published the first Sands and McDougall Melbourne Directory. They continued to publish them until 1974. In 1902 they added a section for Victorian Country Commercial lists and in 1911 they included all of country Victoria.
Directories are useful to find out when and where a person lived. You can search the alphabetical listings of surnames, but this only names the head of household. If you know the suburb and street name you can search the street by street listings within each suburb.  Later editions included trade directories, government, legal, ecclesiastical, associations, agricultural and pastoral, hospitals, banking, municipal and banking directories.

Books
The Library is fortunate to own a large collection of Sands and McDougall Directories. You can view them at Parkdale Library on request.
