Lost or stray pets

Lost pet

If you have lost your pet, after searching neighbouring areas you can:

Step 1.Check Facebook

Check our Lost and Found Pets Facebook page to see if your pet has been found.

  1. We post photos of any lost animals that we have collected.
  2. Send us a photo of your pet via private message on Facebook and we'll create a public post. Include the following details:
    • Name of pet
    • Breed
    • Short description
    • Suburb and street name
    • Owner's contact name and number

Step 2.Contact other organisations

Contact Cranbourne Lost Dogs’ Home (for dogs and cats) on 9702 8055.

Contact local vets and shelters.

Step 3.After we find a pet

All pets collected are checked for a microchip and council registration tag so that we can attempt to reunite them with their owner. If your dog or cat is registered with Kingston ensure your contact details are up to date by contacting us on 1300 653 356.

If we find your pet, we can return it to a location of your choice as long as you or someone else can be available within 30 minutes.

A first-time warning notice will be issued to owners for dogs that are found. You must collect your pet and pay any fines within eight days.

Stray cats

If an owned cat is wandering on your property without permission complete the below steps to resolve the issue.

Step 1.Check for food left outside

Make sure that the cat isn't coming in to finish off any food left outside (e.g. food left out for birds, or for your own pets).

Step 2.Contact the owner

Let the cat’s owner know, in a friendly way, that you don't want the cat visiting you and try to find a cooperative solution. It is the owner's responsibility to keep a cat from visiting you.

Step 3.Contact us

All residents of Kingston, whether they're owners or occupiers, have the right to register a complaint with Council regarding nuisance cats. If you have a complaint regarding an unowned or owned cat wandering on your property please report it to Council on 1300 653 356.

Step 4.Apply for a cat trap

Under Section 23 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994, owners or occupiers of private properties may catch cats, by any humane means, if they are on their properties without permission. Council provides a trapping service to help remove nuisance feral cats. This service is carried out in a humane fashion by our trained, Authorised Officers.

  • Trapped cats must be handed to an authorised officer of Council so they can be impounded.
  • Impounded cats will be given food, water and shelter at the Council Pound.
  • Once the cat is impounded, the owner of the cat is issued with a Notice of Objection, which is a formal letter from Council.
  • The Notice outlines to the owner where the cat cannot go.

Once the Notice of Objection has been served, if the cat returns to roam on private property where it's not welcome, a penalty can be issued. If the cat comes back again after this a further penalty can be issued.

If you have a complaint regarding an unowned or owned cat wandering on your property please report it to Council on 1300 653 356.
