Council is working closely with VicTrack to strengthen the Moorabbin station precinct as the 'heart' of Moorabbin Junction.
Following the adoption of the Moorabbin Activity Centre Structure Plan in 2011, Council approached VicTrack to investigate recommendations made to strategically redevelop the station precinct.
The centrepiece of the Structure Plan is an ambitious use of railway line airspace to create a unique development of contemporary multi-level buildings mixed with open spaces that link the arts and retail areas. Known as the “AxiSpace”, the development will include substantial living, employment, shopping and regional entertainment opportunities, as well as additional public car parking.
An implementation plan developed for Council and VicTrack makes a series of short and medium term objectives that are needed to help make the AxiSpace viable and breathe new life into Moorabbin. Recommendations included:
- Bus Interchange Upgrade
- Creating a pedestrian-friendly Station Street by converting the street to one way, building a footpath on the west side of the street, installing new street furniture, lighting and trees
- Establish a new lifestyle precinct through temporary pop up retail stores next to the station car park
- Revisit the business case to make improvements to the Station Street concourse buildin
- Explore the delivery of the ultimate AxiSpace development in accordance with the Moorabbin Activity Centre Structure Plan
