Opening a New Food Business

In Victoria, under the Food Act 1984, all food businesses that prepare, store and handle food for sale require registration or notification with their local Council. All food businesses must comply with the requirements of the Food Act and Food Standards Code.

Council’s Opening your Own Food Business brochure outlines the steps required to open a new food business in Kingston.

The Guidelines for Food Premises contain easy to understand information on the fit out requirements for a food business and will assist your business with complying with the Food Act and the Food Standards Code.

Before proceeding with the registration process you are advised to contact Council’s Statutory Planning and Building departments for any further requirements on 1300 653 356.

You are also required to contact South East Water to ascertain their requirements relating to the provision of a grease interceptor (trap): (03) 9552 3662.

It is important to think about all aspects involved in establishing your new food business before you start creating plans and submitting applications.

Once you have read through all the information and are ready to submit an application for a new premises, complete and return the application form along with the stated fee, plans of the premises and schedule of finishes.

Apply for a new food business


Mobile Food Premises

Mobile Food Premises must also be registered with Council under the Food Act and must comply with the requirements of the Food Act and Food Standards Code.

The Fit Out Guidelines for Mobile Food Premises contain easy to understand information on the fit out requirements specifically for a mobile food businesses and will assist your business with complying with the Food Act and the Food Standards Code.

Once you have read through all the information and are ready to submit an application for a new premises, complete and return the application form along with the stated fee, plans of the premises and schedule of finishes.

Streatrader

Streatrader is the online registration tool for community groups and businesses selling food from a food stall, truck, van or car. If you sell food from a portable stall, a van, a community hall or other similar sites that you only use occasionally or from a vending machine, you need to submit an application to Council. You should allow 21 days for the registration/notification to be processed. You cannot trade until your premises has been registered/notified.

Temporary Food Stalls

All temporary food stalls must be registered on Streatrader and must submit a Statement of Trade prior to operating. For Kingston Events, operators should comply with the requirements listed in Council's Food Vendor Information sheet.
