Improvement works boost cyclist safety on Station Street

5 December 2016

Safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on Station Street will be improved thanks to an almost $1million partnership between VicRoads and Kingston Council.

Kingston Mayor David Eden said Council had successfully applied for $979,000 in National Black Spot Programme funding to make much-needed improvements on Station Street between Aspendale and Bonbeach.

“Unfortunately this section of Station Street has seen a high number of crashes resulting in injuries with many of them involving cyclists,” Cr Eden said.

“These improvement works will make it safer for all road users and aim to reduce the number of crashes and injuries in the area.”

Between 2010 and 2014, 73 injury crashes were recorded on this section of Station Street – approximately 16% of all injury crashes on minor local roads in Kingston.

The works will include a wide range of traffic improvements including painted cycling lanes, traffic islands, new line markings plus introducing traffic light signals at the Laura Street intersection in Aspendale.

Facilities to promote cycling, such as bicycle storage boxes, will also be installed.

The improvement works will take place in mid-2017.
