Proposed Mentone Hotel development on display for public comment

3 November 2016

The community is now invited to have its say on the proposed Mentone Hotel development during an extended six-week exhibition period.

Plans for the proposed development of the historic Mentone Hotel will be on display from 3 November to 15 December 2016.

Due to the strong community interest, Kingston Council has extended the exhibition period from the required calendar month to six weeks and will also write directly to surrounding residents to ensure the community is kept informed.

The consultation period is proceeding after Victorian Planning Minister Richard Wynn gave authorisation for a planning scheme amendment for the site to be prepared.  The Minister has stated that “authorisation to prepare the amendment is not an indication of whether or not the amendment will ultimately be supported”.

The proposed development would require a site-specific amendment to the planning scheme to allow construction of a four-storey building at the site.

Following public consultation, the new Kingston Council will review all submissions received and determine whether or not to refer the submissions to an independent planning panel for review.

The application lodged with Council includes:

  • retention and restoration of the state heritage-protected building façade and internal staircase as required by the Victorian Heritage Council
  • a food/beverage area within part of the ground floor of the heritage building
  • 11 apartments within the existing heritage-protected building
  • amending existing height controls to allow construction of a four-storey building in the current carpark area behind the hotel (in-line with the current height of the hotel) to include 45 apartments and 12 townhouses.

Council invites interested community members to view the plans during the exhibition period from 3 November to 15 December 2016 and make a submission.

Plans can be viewed online at or in person 8.30am-5pm weekdays at Council’s offices at 1230 Nepean Highway Cheltenham.
