Making the beach accessible for all

12 January 2017

Mordialloc Life Saving Club and Kingston Council are rolling out the blue carpet this summer to help wheelchair users enjoy the beach.

Council has bought 60 metres of blue beach matting to improve access to the water for the elderly and people in wheelchairs.

Mayor David Eden said the recycled rubber matting provides a firm surface across the soft sand to the water’s edge to make Kingston’s foreshore more accessible than ever.

“The matting will be trialled at Mordialloc Beach over the 2016/17 summer season with the support of Mordialloc Life Saving Club, Cr Eden said. “Volunteer lifeguards will be rolling out the ‘blue carpet’ for community use during patrolled hours.”

The new Mordialloc Life Saving Club is also equipped with a range of accessible features, including a beach wheelchair, accessible parking and accessible toilets.
