Council provides a free sharps disposal service and free sharps containers to Kingston residents. This service is only available to residents, not businesses.
Council has temporarily closed its Customer Service and Planning counters due to COVID restrictions. During this time, please drop off sharps containers at a participating pharmacy.
For vulnerable customers (elderly or immune compromised) who are quarantined due to COVID-19 and unable to collect new sharps containers, please contact our Customer Care team on 1300 653 356.
There are also pharmacies that participate in the Victorian Government Needle and Syringe Exchange Program which can also be accessed for sharps disposal during COVID-19. Download the list of participating pharmacies.
A free replacement container is supplied.
Please note: Sharps containers that are damaged, enclosed in other bags, or where sharps are visible, will not be accepted.
If you find a syringe or a yellow SHARPS container that may contain syringes, contact us on 1300 653 356 to arrange for its collection.
The Safe Retrieval and Disposal of Needles brochure contains important information on safely retrieving and disposing of sharps.
Businesses that use sharps for procedures/services they provide must arrange for sharps disposal via a private contractor. Private contractors that collect and dispose of sharps are listed in the Yellow Pages under Medical Waste Disposal or contact Council’s Environmental Health Services on 9581 4573 for more information.
