The Facts: Waterways describes the area which is made up of man-made wetlands and lakes in the middle of the residential estate.

Waterways is bounded by Governor Road in the north, Springvale Road in the east, Mordialloc Creek in the south, and the suburb of Braeside in the west.

Settlement of the area dates from the mid-1800s, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Population was minimal until 2000.

It is in the state electorate district of Keysborough and in the federal electorate division of Isaacs.

People: The population in Waterways is 2,453.

The population in Waterways forecast to increase by decline to 2,102 people (-14.3%) in 2036.

5.3% of households are lone person households compared to 24.4% in Kingston.

People aged 35- 49 years are forecast to have the greatest population increase with an additional 248 people in this age group 2016 to 2036.  

Housing: The number of households is forecast to increase by 1.6% from 733 in 2016 to 744 households in 2036.

25% are 2 bedroom, 55% are 3 bedroom, 17% are 4 bedroom, 3% are 5 bedroom dwellings.

89% of households in Waterways fully own their dwelling or are purchasing it (mortgage) and 7.9% are renting privately.

Features: Waterways is a recent residential area.

Waterways is the only suburb in Australia that consists of 20% parkland and 40% water. The lakes that surround Waterways are man-made wetlands that serve as a filtration system for fresh water flowing down from Dandenong and Mordialloc Creeks into Port Phillip Bay.
