Clarinda Area Profile

The Facts: One theory is that the name Clarinda came from one of the many Scottish settlers.

Clarinda is bounded by Centre Road in the north, Springs Road, Bourke Road and Clayton Road in the east, the proposed Dingley Freeway in the south, and Clarinda Road in the west.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1800's, with land used mainly for market gardens.

The State electorate for Clarinda is the Clarinda District. The Federal electorate for Clarinda is the Hotham Division.

People: Clarinda's population is 7,490 people.

The population is forecast to increase by 9.1% (to 8,168 people) in 2036. 

17.9% of households are lone person households.

People aged 70 - 84 years are forecast to have the greatest population increase with an additional 365 people in this age group 2016 to 2036. 

Housing: The number of households is forecast to increase by 5% from 2,675 in 2016 to 2,810 households in 2036. The largest growth is expected for lone person households. 

10.6% are 2 bedroom, 49.7% are 3 bedroom, 24.5% are 4 bedroom, 6.2% are 5 or more bedroom dwellings. 

71.8% of households in Clarinda fully own their dwelling or are purchasing it (mortgage) and 20.7% are renting privately and 4.2% are in social housing.

Features: Bald Hill Park pays respect to Clarinda’s first name. With over 13 hectares, Bald Hill Park sports a bike and walking path, picnic shelters and playgrounds.

Major features of the area include Clarinda Shopping Centre, Bald Hill Park, Baxter Tip, Alex Fraser Recycling and several schools.

The population density of Clarinda is 21.71 persons per hectare. 

In 1912, the suburb name was changed to Clarinda. It has previously been known as Bald Hill and Bayview.

Nowadays Clarinda is an established residential and horticultural area. The southern area is non-urban, used mainly for flower and vegetable production.
