News>Council’s playgroup takes out national award
Kingston Council’s Circle of Life playgroup has been recognised with the prestigious Wendy Butler Award for the most innovative leisure programme.

| Now in its second year, the Circle of Life playgroup was established when two of Kingston Council’s departments – the Community and Aged Care and Maternal and Child Health teams – saw the need for a program that would benefit both groups of clientele, namely seniors and young mothers.
Every Tuesday morning from 10am-11.30am a group of families go to Corben House Residential Aged Care for a playgroup session with the residents and staff. The session begins with a welcome, followed by fun activities, story time and a song. Toys such as building blocks, dolls houses, and tea sets were obtained for the group through Council’s Maternal and Child Health team and through donations.
The program aims to create a welcoming environment that promotes meaningful relationships between different age groups, encouraging respect and understanding for each other, while also helping build a stronger community.
The group has regular attendees including seven local families and six residents of Corben House, who experience some form of dementia but all enjoy seeing their ‘little friends’ every Tuesday.
The mothers and fathers who attend the group have reported back only positive comments. One mother who brings her child each week said “You see the smile on the residents’ faces, they love watching the children playing... I’m so glad that I made the choice to attend the Circle of Life playgroup.”
