News>Learn to swim classes for families in need
Kingston Council’s two leisure centres, Don Tatnell Leisure Centre and Waves, are supporting local charity Family Life by providing eight children from families in need with one year each of free swimming lessons.

| Learning to swim is vital. Research shows that drowning is a leading cause of preventable death in children aged 0-4 years and, according to the Royal Life Saving Society, children are most likely to miss out on swimming lessons if they come from lower socio-economic and disadvantaged areas.
Family Life is based in Chelsea, Frankston and Sandringham and provides support to families experiencing difficult times through counselling, mediation, mental health services, support and community educational services, outreach to homes, case coordination and advocacy.
Every child needs to be able to swim, especially in a country like Australia. This is especially important for many of our families who live in or near beachside suburbs. By working with Family Life we are supporting local children to participate in organised swimming lessons and learn one very important life skill.
The children enrolled in the Kingston learn to swim classes are all beginners who will progress through the program beginning with water confidence, water safety and swimming skills.
Kingston leisure centres are working in conjunction with the Royal Life Saving Society’s Swim and Survive Fund to promote the importance of water safety education. The aim of this fund is to provide swim and survive lessons to children from Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse, and regional and remote communities, as well as those from lower socio-economic areas.
The whole community can get support the Swim and Survive Fund. For more information or to pledge please visit http://royallifesavingonlinefundraising.org.au/event/Operation10000 | |
