More than 15,000 people of all ability levels came out to enjoy the inaugural Fun in the Sun Festival at Bicentennial Park in Chelsea.
The first of its type in Kingston, the Fun in the Sun Festival was the brainchild of seven- year-old Jefferson Bauer, the son of Councillor Donna Bauer, who wanted to create a fun day with a focus on making the event accessible for everyone.
Not content with just coming up with the idea, Jefferson decided to write a letter to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, seeking support for the event. The encouraging reply he received set him on a path of researching and fundraising, with a little help from his friends at Patterson Lakes Primary School.
The event featured a star-studded line up - Headlined by Dorothy the Dinosaur & Friends, Choir of Hope and Inspiration (formerly Choir of Hard Knocks) & Code One Police Band.
To support Jefferson’s vision, Chelsea Community Renewal and Kingston’s MetroAccess program brought together a range of partners who have worked as a team to bring about this wonderful event. Festival committee partners include: Scope Victoria, Family Life, Leisure Link Up, Yarrabah School, Moira, Interchange Southern, Special Olympics, and Patterson Lakes Primary School.
Jefferson and the Fun in the Sun committee were overwhelmed by the way the community embraced the event and would like to thank all the volunteers, community groups and sponsors for making it possible.
