Kingston Junior Mayor election

Kingston Council is proud to continue its long and unique tradition of electing a Junior Mayor. This year’s event is poised to take place on Thursday 19 April 2012, to coincide with the Kingston Youth Festival and National Youth Week.

The Junior Mayor Election began as an annual event during Chelsea Youth Week more than 50 years ago. It provides primary schools in Kingston with an opportunity to showcase the talents and attributes of their young people, allowing young people to take an active role within their community in a way that develops and consolidates vital skills such as teamwork, community-mindedness, writing speeches and presenting in front of large numbers of people. It also encourages young people to set goals for themselves and strive to achieve them.

All primary schools in Kingston are invited to participate in the Junior Mayor Election.  Each participating school may nominate one Grade 6 student as its head speaker and three other team members as representatives to participate in the Junior Mayor Election. The Head Speaker from each school will make a speech that represents their ideas around the question, ‘How can young people use their skills to make a brighter future for the City of Kingston?’ At the conclusion of the speeches, the students in attendance vote for their favourite speech and a new Junior Mayor for the year will be crowned.

In 2011, 26 schools participated in the Junior Mayor election, with a total of 100 Grade 6 students from across Kingston being involved in the process and attending on the day. Olivia Guhl, of Our Lady of the Assumption Primary School, was voted by her peers to be the Kingston Junior Mayor for 2011/2012.

The Junior Mayor Election is coordinated by Kingston Youth Services, with sponsorship provided by the City of Kingston; Joyce Davis, Youth Week Ambassador and Chelsea resident; and the Chelsea Rotary Club.
