The City of Kingston has been granted $450,000 funding to identify key projects and priorities and progress a number of stormwater projects, thanks to Melbourne Water’s Living Rivers Stormwater Program.

Melbourne Water’s $10 million Living Rivers Stormwater Program aims to better manage urban stormwater, working in partnership with 38 councils in the Port Phillip and Westernport region.

Kingston Council has been granted $450,000 to undertake a number of projects, including:
  • Identifying the best water quality solutions and helping Kingston become a water sensitive city
  • Planning for water quality improvements to take advantage of opportunities with the Dingley Arterial works
  • Designing and building extensive water management initiatives within the streetscape of the Cheltenham Activity Centre
  • Updating guidelines for developers on waster sensitive urban design
Other Kingston initiatives to improve stormwater quality include:
  • Litter Prevention Officer– Council’s new full-time Litter Prevention Officer is working with working with businesses, residents, and schools, and liaising with the EPA and other community groups to develop an industry best practice litter prevention strategy and education program
  • Litter traps –Council and Melbourne Water have installed a number of litter traps in main drains in the City
  • Rain gardens – Council has designed and constructed more than 130 rain gardens since 2001
  • Home garden guide– Information is available to help residents protect stormwater quality
  • 10,000 rain gardens program – City of Kingston is supporting Melbourne Water’s aim to have 10,000 private and public raingarden’s built across Melbourne.
